Review: Chock Full of Beans

Image
Interestingly popular place despite the distance from the city. Filled with the average working crowd you would expect in town, you can find them at Chock Full of Beans during the lunch hours. Attracted by the appealing set lunch ranging from $12 to $14, for a main and a drink or a soup, is not too bad of a choice, especially if the drink is of premium coffee. An average size shop, like any other along the Changi Village shops, the owners make full utilise the space by offering al fresco dining. Quite a number will be sitting outside, for 2 reasons. Firstly because they have been in the office for too long and want to defrost, and secondly because there is no other space. We ordered the BBQ Pork Sandwich ($12) and the Salmon Penne ($14). The lunch sets come with either a soup or a drink. We took one of each, Mushroom Soup and a Café Latte. Food didn’t take very long to come despite the full house. Latte came first, then the soups and the mains, as expected.

Review: Kiasu Espresso @ 100 AM

It seems that Singaporeans are increasingly searching for a good coffee fix all day long. No longer are the Starbucks and Coffee Bean sufficient to quench the thirst of a coffee addict. Many stalls are not coming up with their own coffee drinks and adapting their marketing strategy to suit the market. Rightly so, as I paid a visit to Kiasu Espresso, a branch-off from the popular 40 Hands in Tiong Bahru. Only a few days old and already popular with the working crowd in Tanjong Pagar and in the coffee circles. The owners still making plans of adjusting the fixtures and fittings in the shop. The concept is targeted at people who do not have to time to sit and chat but want their coffee fix. Friendly staff greets potential customers at the entrance of the shop, with the espresso machine behind them. The interior is a little hard and lack the cosy warmth feeling when one says the word ‘café’, but it suits the concepts of a take-away coffee joint well. I had the  café

Rich Getting Richer

I refer to the article in the Sunday Times ‘Some guys have all the luck’. It describes how 3 guys have won big prizes, a million dollars from the ‘Be a Changi Millionaire’, a new BMW X1 and a 900sq feet condominium, all through their good fortune when they participated in their respective contest. That got me thinking, is it right? The definition of right is vague, some would say yes – because they legitimately participated in the contest and were lucky enough – but on the other hand is it the case of the rich getting richer? The man, who won the million dollars from the Changi contest, is pictured as humble and pragmatic, who went for an affordable fish porridge dinner with his family after winning – nothing wrong in that, I always enjoy local fare but keep in mind that he hasn’t gotten the money yet. He doesn’t want to leave the impression (on his children) that money is easy to make – like all good parents seek to do. However, I’m skeptical if it is possible. The spirit is wil

Mugging Expedition - Group Therapy

Part of the Uni life is to undergo the metamorphosis of becoming an 'adult', someone who is able to handle the working world (or teaching world) and all the rubbish that comes along with it. In this process, one has to face the arduous task of having to sit down and study. Many Singaporeans like to study in places which are not meant for studying. Ironically, many popular outlets such as fast food chains and some coffee places will have the "No studying allowed!" sign. Studying is equated to reading notes from paper, but if you studying using your laptop, its not 'studying'. The Mugging Gang Anyway, the stress of studying or mugging (terms used interchangeably), alters a person's lifestyle, usually into one who is more consumer oriented. Cost is not so much of a concern or priority but satisfaction and stress-relieving ability of that purchase or activity. This consumer orientated lifestyle is like an addiction because once the exams are over, the li

A Country Get Away

Marmalade Pantry - Fairway Drive ('Country Side of Singapore') To have a relatively important occasion would suffice to dine at Marmalade Pantry for the average Singaporean, would be my comment if anyone were to ask me of my experience. The 'Oh' so popular tree. Getting There We went there on a Tuesday evening for dinner. Leaving Clementi before the rush hour to avoid any jams along Bukit Timah Road. Arriving just before 6pm, it allowed us to walk around the vicinity of the restaurant, which also houses Rider's Cafe and the stable itself. One would either have to take a cab in or drive into this place for it is about a km from the main road, Eng Neo Road. Interior, facing the al fresco dining area. Their signature flower, found on every table. After walking around and taking photos for about half an hour, we headed into the restaurant and to found that we were the second customers. Deciding to sit indoors, so as to cool off in the air-c

A Slice of Revolution

Roaming the streets on lesser known parts of Singapore, my usual walk from Bugis to Dhoby Ghout and vice verse, if I'm too lazy to take the train. I chanced upon this place called Slice - the Pizza Revolution at PoMo, along the same stretch as TCC. It was about 7.30pm and I was looking for a place to have dinner with my girlfriend. Slice - The Pizza Revolution Logo We didn't plan to go there but what drew us in was their poster of the  sun-dried tomato with fetta cheese  pizza. However, to my disappointment, they ran out of sun-dried tomatoes and I resorted to the next best alternative, which were Pepperoni Power  & Salmon Rocket. Not point trying something common, when you have an opportunity to try something unique. It was like a fast food setting, where you ordered your own food, and collect it when its ready. Table and chair layout were similar to that of Subway (also located downstairs). But what made it unique was their décor, the walls and counter were p

Place: Toby's - The Dessert Asylum Overall Rating:  7.5/10 Went there for lunch on Saturday with my girlfriend as we bought a Groupon deal which gives us $40 worth of food for $20 value.  We were showed to our seats after they prepared out table (as it was the end of the lunch peak period), and we sat at the end of the shop facing the front entrance of the mall. It was a nice seat, allowing natural light to come in and was perfect for taking photos. We decided to order the Pork Ribs with Potato Salad [$19.95] and the German Bratwurst Sausage with Garlic Rice [$16.95] (both house specialities) and a drink (Coffee Teaser, $7.95) to share. No long, our dishes came and we tucked in.  Pork Ribs with Potato Salad I found the ribs to be just nice, similar to the ones at Cafe Cartel but better. I might have looked small, but accompanied with the potato salad it was just nice. The ribs were tender and juicy when I cut into it, with slightly crispy bits at the edges ad
